Q&A with Directors/Designers Nathan Boldman and Lauren Mayer-Beug

This month, ArsenalVisual is proud to feature the team of Nathan Boldman and Lauren Mayer-Beug, whose work includes projects for HP, Red Bull, the 2010 Winter Olympics, Fox Sports, and the opening of “24.”

Nathan and Lauren’s recent projects include Taxicab Confessions, Money Grabbers, and MasterCard, along with numerous music videos. They joined Arsenal FX in October 2010. “This is such an important step for us,” said Executive Producer Ashley Hydrick at the time. “We’ve been getting boards for design projects, specifically bigger projects requiring high-end design, and it’s so important to have the right people on staff to pursue and execute the work.”

Now that the right people have settled in with the right company, we sat down to ask them a few questions about their partnership, their art, and life at Arsenal FX.

US Cellular Sets Off “Fireworks”

With “Fireworks,” Arsenal FX continues its legacy of top-notch work with US Cellular and Publicis & Hal Riney, SF. For their latest collaboration, Owner/Artist Mark Leiss helps to deliver a wake up call for wireless. Camera follows a lit fuse as it winds its way across a sleepy, deteriorating rooftop representing the wireless world. The fuse ignites all manner of devices – toasters, TVs, a frying pan, and neon signs – culminating in a break-of-dawn explosion in the form of The Belief Project.

String Harmonic Event for Hamomi Benefits Nairobi Children

On August 5, Arsenal FX collaborated with String Harmonic to host a benefit for Hamomi Children’s Centre a nonprofit organization that educates and serves the needs of orphans and underprivileged children in Nairobi.

String Harmonic Founder Dan Coplan and Co-Founder Gil Nevo contacted Arsenal FX EP Ashley Hydrick about auctioning off guitars donated by Gretsch. Coplan handed the instruments to artists to paint and transform into “art guitars”. Hydrick says she and owner/artist Mark Leiss jumped at the chance to host the event. “Gil and Dan put the whole thing together and we spread the word to friends and clients,” Hydrick says. “The turnout was great!”

State Farm and Arsenal FX Fill a Stadium for ‘National Pastime’

For “National Pastime,” a new spot from State Farm via Draft FCB, Arsenal FX added enough CG “Massive” agents to fill a baseball stadium – in fact, in addition to the lead actor, only a handful of people in the spot are real.

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Viddler video.

In the spot, a tracking shot follows a spokesman as he moves through the stadium, sharing important stats about the insurance company. As he takes his seat, we’re treated to a panoramic view of the crowd.

It took a team of six artists, working over the course of a month, to execute the effect. (more…)

Tecate Spec: Beer Does a Body Good

Director Richard Sears puts an alien spin on the classic enchanted frog tale, with “Tecate Your Body.”

In the spec spot, a man discovers a tiny alien who’s washed up on the beach. Resuscitating the creature requires just one thing: Tecate, and it’s worth it.

Arsenal FX provided VFX for the spec and was asked to literally bring the creature to life: to animate the lips and eyes and perform some color-correction to the creature’s ash-colored body.

Client: Tecate (spec)
Spot Title: “Alien”

Director: Richard Sears
